Lucifer Sam ist eine Katze. Eine Siamesische Katze. Syd Barrett meint sie solle doch bitte ihr Glück als Schiffskatze versuchen. Hip sollte sie auch noch sein.
Die Katze ist nämlich immer an seiner rechten Seite. An seiner Linken hingegen sitzt die Hexe Jennifer Gentle (angeblich eine Anspielung auf seine damalige Freundin Jenny Spires).
Das ist in etwa der textliche Inhalt des zweiten Songs auf dem Pink Floyd Debut-Album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Ursprünglich hiess der Song "Percy The Ratcatcher" und war eigentlich auch als Soundtrack für ein nicht näher definiertes Filmprojekt gedacht.
Ein Animationsfilm von 2016 von Steve Bobinski im 60er Jahre Comic-Style zum Barrett Song, trägt den Untertitel "Percy The Ratcatcher".

Musikalisch hingegen bewegt sich der Song in Richtung 60er-Jahre Film-Themes, alá "Batman" oder "James Bond". Lucifer Sam ist ein sträflich vernachlässigtes Meisterwerk der frühen Pink Floyd, das durchaus Hitpotential gehabt hätte, wäre es als Single veröffentlicht worden. Lucifer Sam ist tanzbar, hip, mystisch, lustig, anspruchsvoll....
Obwohl es mehr als 15 verschiedene Cover-Versionen des Songs gibt, hat der Song es auf keine einzige Compilation geschafft.
Die Mono-Version des Songs dauert etwa 5 Sekunden länger.
Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets haben das Lied fix in ihr Live-Programm aufgenommen und 2020 auf "Live at the Roundhouse" veröffentlicht.Weitere Veröffentlichungen:
