Im August 2014 veröffentlichte Roger Waters ein Gedicht namens "Crystal Clear Brooks" auf der Webseite Salon. In dem Artikel kritisierte Waters die amerikanische Unterstützung der israelischen Regierung und meinte “What, I wonder, would Americans do if it were their neighborhoods being invaded and if they were the ones living under siege? I think it’s safe to say Americans wouldn’t stand for it.”

Bei der Gelegenheit erklärt er auch den Text des Gedichtes:

“Although it expresses my feelings, I cannot but think that the children in Gaza would give anything but their birthright and their pride and their basic human rights for a glass of crystal clear water. And, I think too, of the Bakr children, the sons of fishermen, who were slain while playing on a Gaza beach."

Am 24. Juli 2015 hatte die Vertonung des Gedichts seine Live-Premiere während des Newport Folk Festivals. Es handelt sich dabei um ein renommiertes Folk-Festival in den USA, welches durch Bob Dylan's Auftritte in den 60ern berühmt wurde. Waters trat hier gemeinsam mit der Band My Morning Jacket (mit der er bereits zum Benefizkonzert "Love for Levon" zusammenarbeitete), sowie den Chorsängerinnen der Band Lucius und G. E. Smith auf. G. E. Smith ist seit der The Wall Tour von 2010-2013 ein enger musikalischer Begleiter von Roger Waters. Er liefert in dieser Live-Version auch ein tolles Gitarrensolo.

Roger Waters erstmals live am Piano 2015

Während der Song musikalisch den typisch Waters'schen Akkordfolgen entspricht, überraschte Waters mit seiner ersten Live-Performance am Piano! Auch belehrte er die Kritiker seiner Stimme eines Besseren, indem er in einem anspruchsvollen Refrain bewies, dass er's noch kann.

Es bleibt die Hoffnung, dass der Song es auf das (hoffentlich bald erscheinende) neue Album schafft, in welchem es ja laut seinen Aussagen um das Töten von Kindern im Krieg geht.
